World Vision China - History

In 1989, World Vision launched a rural development programme in Yishui County in collaboration with the China International Centre for Economic & Technical Exchanges and the Yishui County Government. The programme helped to improve the water systems and provided training to village doctors to enhance their medical skills.

Established in 1950, World Vision is a child-focused international relief, development abd advicact organization.

In 1962, Hong Kong was severely hit by Typhoon Wanda. World Vision was responsive to the disaster by its quick delivery of relief goods to the flood victims. The Hong Kong Office was set up afterwards to continue its work.

In 1982, World Vision entered China when it participated in the relief work of the Qinghai flood disaster. With the staunch support from the Central and local governments, World Vision has laid a good foundation in China.

In the 1980s, World Vision launched a health education project in Guangdong and the first rural integrated community development programme in Yishui County of Shandong.

In 1993, the China Ministry Department of World Vision Hong Kong became World Vision China to further its mission of alleviating poverty and realizing development in China.

In the 1990s, besides expanding its relief and rehabilitation programmes in China, World Vision also launched orphans care services, services for children in especially difficult circumstances as well as different poverty alleviation and development programmes.

In addition, since 1997, the Child-focused Area Development Programmes have also been introduced in cooperation with the China Charity Federation.

In October 2001, the Information Office of the State Council released a White Paper entitled "The Development-oriented Poverty Reduction Programme for Rural China", in which the contribution of World Vision in poverty alleviation in China was recognized among several international organizations.

In 1991, Graeme Irvine, President of World Vision International visited Beijing and met with Ms. Wu Yi, Vice Minister of Foreign Economic Relations and Trade at that time.

Our Awards

World Vision's poverty alleviation and development efforts have been widely recognized by all levels of the Chinese government.

In November 2005, World Vision's Poverty Alleviation and Development Projects in Guangxi won the "China Charity Award" which was given by the Ministry of Civil Affairs.
In September 2006, the Civil Affairs Department of Shaanxi Province and the Shaanxi Charity Federation jointly awarded World Vision's Poverty Alleviation and Development Programmes in Shaanxi the honour of "Shaanxi Charity Award".
World Vision's Shangzhou Project Office also won the titles of "Advanced Charity Unit" and "Enthusiastic Advanced Charity Unit 2006" respectively in September and December in the same year.
On 14 January 2010, the Programmes for Children in Especially Difficult Circumstances in Guangxi has won World Vision the inaugural "Liuzhou Charity Special Contribution Award" in an activity co-organised by Liuzhou Charity Federation and Liuzhou Evening Post.
