After receiving the bags of rice, the flood-stricken villagers in Guangxi showed their smiling faces. |
In seven days since August 11, World Vision had distributed a total of 628,785 kg rice to 41,919 flood-stricken villagers in Jiangxi Province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region to ease their difficulties after the disaster.
Each person received a bag of 15kg rice, which was sufficient for one-month consumption. "These three bags of rice really ease our anxiety. Please give our thanks to those warm-hearted people!" An old couple from Nankang City of Jiangxi Wu Chunzhu and her husband Zhong Chunsheng carried their 6-month-old granddaughter Zhong Yongqing in their arms to get the rice. They lost confidence towards the future after their house collapsed in the flood.
Their voices were echoed by others at another distribution site. "These two bags of rice just resolve our immediate food problem! Thanks to World Vision and the kind-hearted donors!" Wei Jiliang of Dahua County in Guangxi brought his 5-year-old son Wei Qingfeng with him to receive rice at the distribution site in Dahua Township. With all the 200 kg food grain in his storage soaked in floodwater, Wei was worried about the future.
The Jiangxi-Guangxi distribution was yet another big relief operation of World Vision following the rice distribution in Hunan Province at the end of July. As a result, World Vision has hitherto inputted a total of RMB 2,479,000 (USD 364,600) in all the three provinces/regions to benefit more than 47,600 people with over 715,000 kg of rice.
During August 11-15, World Vision inputted RMB 1.44 million (USD212,000) to distribute a total of 423,915 kg rice to 28,261 villagers in Dayu County and Nankang City of Jiangxi, of which 251,265 kg was provided to 16,751 beneficiaries in the former and 172,650 kg to 11,510 in the latter.
At the same time, during August 14-18, World Vision also arranged rice distribution worth RMB 740,000 (USD 109,000) in 9 flood-stricken townships of Dahua County in Guangxi, namely Dahua, Yantan, Beijing, Gongchuan, Yixu, Guwen, Gonghe, Baima and Liuye. 204,870 kg rice was distributed to benefit 13,658 people.
On the other hand, World Vision is budgeting RMB 340,000 (USD 50,000) to subsidize local rehabilitation projects in Baihe County of Shaanxi Province such as house and bridge reconstruction. World Vision's Baihe Programme Office will also organize disaster risk reduction activities for flood-stricken villagers and families of sponsored children, in a bid to raise their awareness towards disasters and enhance their resilience against future ones.
From mid-June to mid-July, many parts of China had experienced continuous heavy rains. A total of 12 provinces/municipalities/regions including Hunan, Jiangxi and Guangxi had suffered serious flooding. The number of affected people amounted to over 39 million and direct economic loss was RMB 13 billion (USD 1.9 billion).
